Marine Corps good way to travel and pay for college but not this war stuff, Dude

By Deborah Sharp, USA TODAY

MIAMI — When Travis Clark joined the U.S. military at age 19, it seemed like a good way to travel and pay for college. It was 1996, the country was at peace, and Clark signed on for an eight-year hitch.

Now, with a year left on his contract, the Marine reservist from Plantation, Fla., says he won't go if his unit is called to serve in a war against Iraq.

Give the guy an 'Under Other Than Honorable Conditions' discharge and say good riddance...

That is the way it was handled back then Frank. Made one wonder what they were thinking when they raised their Right hand.

refusing to do his duty???

ok, let me travel, give me training, pay me, and give me v.a. benefits for the rest of my life. but oh yeah, by the way, if the time comes when i must fight for my country, im too much of a pussy, and i will refuse.

if he refuses to go, he is awol, and should face the normal consequenses of such.

AT THE VERY LEAST, HE SHOULD GET A DISHONORABLE DISCHARGE.

Wouldn't want to have this guy watching my back on the battlefield anyways.

Yes, what did he/they think the USMC did?

He signed the papers. Moron. How could he not know that the U.S. is one war loving, reckless country? Too bad for him. Shoot him if he does not serve. You make a commitment you keep it.

I told my nephews to stay far, far away from the military. I don’t want them to go through what I went through. Let the overzealous patriots serve (actually the over zealous patriots don’t serve in uniform; they just become conservatives, listen to fat boy Limbaugh, watch Fox and run for political office—****ing spineless pussies).

"Shoot him if he does not serve."

Sounds like Saddam's philosophy. You should run for brutal dictator after this "war".

It is. I don't really want him shot. Maybe jailed for 50 years though.

Tom Ridge comes to mind here as aquick example of a patriot and a conservative--here is a little something from ABC news about him:

From Harvard to Vietnam

Ridge grew up in Erie, Pa., and received his B.A. with honors from Harvard University in 1967. Drafted into the Army while attending Dickinson Law School in Carlisle, Pa., he earned a Bronze Star for Valor while serving combat duty in Vietnam.

After returning to the United States, Ridge got his law degree from Dickinson in 1972. He then practiced private law and worked as an assistant district attorney before becoming active in Republican Party politics and running for Congress in 1982.

Ridge gained a seat in the House of Representatives on the first try and served six terms until taking over in the governor's mansion. Pennsylvania law limits governors to two terms, and Ridge was due to leave office in early 2003

I don't consider Ridge an overzealous patriot.

Overzealous partiots:

Bush (NG, reserves doesn't count, especailly when you don't show up for duty)
Rumsfield
Cheney
A bunch of other Bush cronies
Fat Boy
O'Reily
Many posters on this board.

I stepped up to the plate. Let's see a show of hands.

i doubt mr. Ridge would agree with your poorly thought out logic and nor do i. The fact is you made too broad a statement and i called you on it with an example. As for your examples:

George W Bush;

Like it or not he "did" serve in the military, as a pilot flying f-102's in the Texas Air National Guard. A "fortunate son" as the old CCR song would describe and did not serve any active duty to my knowledge.

Dick Cheney;
No military service whatsoever, however he has worked in public service since the Nixon years, most notably as Secretary of Defense under former President Bush.

Donald Rumsfeld;
After attending Princeton university on academic and NROTC scholarships he served in the U.S Navy as an aviator and later as a flight instructor. In 1957 he transferred to the ready reserve and continued his naval service until 1975 when he was sworn in as Sec. of Defense (transferred again this time to stand by reserve) and retired at the rank of captain in 1989.

"a bunch of other Bush cronies";
? you really need to be more specific....

Rush Limbaugh;
You got me there wont defend butterball...
However I don't believe he has ran for office

Bill O'Reilly;
Not sure about military service or if he has ever ran for office..

"Many posters on this board";
Again you really should be more specific, however i will say for the record i believe there is quite a diverse group of 'posters' here. Some who are capable of making intelligent statements and others who will just blindly attack because they don't 'like' something, but all in all an interesting bunch.

Sure am glad you didn't bring Colin Powell's military and political views into question....

So exactly ONE of them has actual "war" experience. Great representation.

Oddly enough, exactly ONE congressman has a child in the enlisted ranks of the military.

http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/eriklacitis/134613120_erik12.html

"Carrying out the administration's policy toward Iraq will require long-term sacrifices by the American people, particularly those who have sons and daughters in the military. Yet the Congress that voted overwhelmingly to allow the use of force in Iraq includes only one member who has a child in the enlisted ranks of the military — just a few more have children who are officers."

By the way - O'Reilly has ZERO military experience as well.

"Next, stay tuned for the "No-Spin" meister himself, Fox News' Bill O'Reilly (no military service in his bio, either.) Let's rock and show Saddam who is the boss! We'll back our kids in the military! We're flying that U. S. flag high and proud on our SUV. "

actually lander if you would have looked a little closer no one on kw list has 'war' experience i brought up Tom Ridge and Donald Rumsfeld was after Korea. My point and i think i made it quite well is the fact that he mentioned members of G.W.'s cabinet as having no military experience.

Bush was safer in the Texas National Gaurd than if he had ran off to Canada. During height of Viet Nam War, you needed some serious juice to get in any National Gaurd unit. Very few, if any, (unlike now) were called up and sent to jungle.
Does anybody know Karl Rove's service if any?(IMO he's the second most powerful man in nation at least until Bush is re-elected.)
